New York PLI
Successful paralegals must be experts in their
fields and rely on solid professional skills. To contribute to increasing
their skill set, 220 paralegals attended the Paralegal Leadership
Institute (PLI) held in New York City last month cosponsored by
CSC® and Estrin LegalEd. PLI encourages it participants to throw
out the boring lectures and instead focus on lively, interactive
activities that get the intellectual juices flowing. Legal experts,
including many from CSC, led all events. These experts were handpicked
for their ability to make learning an incredibly rich experience.
This fast-paced training conference earned rave reviews from paralegals
across the country because it provided a fun and challenging training
environment unlike any other educational program in the market.
Workshop highlights included:
What You Need to Know About UCCs
This informative and helpful workshop explained the impact of UCC
Revised Article 9, Sections 5 and 7. Attendees learned about the
nuances of not only the statutory changes to Revised Article 9 but
also the administrative changes made at the filing offices nationwide
and the effect both UCC liens and other statutory liens. The workshop
also provided information on how to avoid some of the new pitfalls,
to ensure that the attendees' transactions are handled correctly
and their secured positions are established, with special emphasis
on the phase of the transition period we have just entered.
The Delaware Statutory Trust (DST) :
A Real-World Layman's Discussion
One of the hottest areas right now is tenancy
in common. This unique workshop discussed real estate and corporate
issues paralegals may experience. For example, in 2004 the IRS issued
Revenue Ruling 2004-86, which allowed a Delaware Statutory Trust
to be used in support of Tenancy in Common transactions. Investors
who hold TIC unit interests through the trust qualify for 1031 Like
Kind Exchange treatment. This is a real incentive for tax-motivated
real estate investors.
Using Electronic Minutes Books for Corporate Maintenance
Accurate record-keeping procedures and corporate housekeeping issues
play a key role for the corporate paralegal. Electronic minutes
books are designed to safely secure all of your critical corporate
documents. This workshop explored what to expect of corporate governance
and how to anticipate ethical pitfalls.
Alternative Entities: An In-Depth Review
During this workshop, paralegals compared the legal and tax characteristics
of corporations, limited liability companies, limited and general
partnerships, and sole proprietorships. Special purpose entities
were also discussed, and the attendees learned about the different
types of special purpose entities, why they are used, and how they
are created. Particular special purpose entities that were discussed
included passive investment companies and bankruptcy remote entities.
How to Utilize Web Technologies to Eliminate Redundant
Information and Reduce Risk or Drive New Business Development
This topic addressed how Web technologies like XML and ASP services
can be used to eliminate redundant information and reduce risk or
drive new business development. It focused primarily on how paralegals
in law firms can help retain important clients and drive new business
generation by being well-versed in the increasingly important role
technology and systems integration with important clients via XML
plays. It also analyzed how in-house paralegals can use similar
methods to forge stronger, more cost effective relationships with
their network of outside law firms, thus helping the corporation
meet its goals of cost savings and better overall risk management.
Attend the Next PLI Conference:
CSC is pleased to announce a second date and location
for the PLI. This outstanding educational conference will be held
February 27–28, 2006, at the Hyatt Regency in Chicago. A new
track has been designed specifically for in-house paralegals working
within corporate legal departments.
