Domain Name News Updates

Law Enforcement takes down 1200 domain names
Around 1,200 domain names in use in the UK have been taken out of service by Nominet, the .uk registry. The organization has received an instruction from London’s Metropolitan Police Central e-Crime Unit to take down the .co.uk websites, which have been under investigation in relation to criminal activity as part of Operation Papworth.

A number of the sites are believed to be involved in the distribution of counterfeit goods, or have failed to supply any products to those who have placed orders. Nominet said in a statement: "We worked closely with the police and our registrars to quickly carry out the instruction to shut down access to these sites." The organization added that the company is looking to make "the internet a safe place for all users". Earlier this month, Nominet claimed that over eight million .uk registrations have now been made. The firm said the announcement was evidence of the growing use of .uk as a top level domain name.

This raises the question of whether more domain name Registry’s will start working with law enforcement to take proactive action against fraudulent web sites.

Launch of IDN.EU
EUrid, the .EU Registry operator, will be commencing the landrush launch of IDN.EU beginning on December 10, 2009. These applications will be on a first-come first-served basis and no documentation is required. However, a local registrant is required for registration.

IDN.eu will be available in 23 different languages spoken amongst the 27 Member States of the European Union (view the Languages and accepted characters for this launch). CSC registration pricing will be the same as ASCII.eu (English).

ICANN asked to stop URDP proposals
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has been asked to stop plans to change Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policies (UDRP).

In a letter to the organization, the Internet Commerce Association (ICA) has claimed that amendments put forward by the World Intellectual Property Organization and the Czech Arbitration Court would not be suitable. According to the body, the pair also believes such changes could be introduced without any significant approval from certain bodies.

Philip S Corwin, counsel for the ICA, said: "We believe that such changes are significant policy initiatives that can only be implemented following GNSO review and ICANN Board approval." He added that ICANN should tell the bodies they have no right to adopt any policy changes beyond their supplemental rules.

ICANN recently called on the public to comment on the first draft consultation of its strategic plan for 2010 to 2013. Comments are being accepted until January 21st next year.

Russian Federation Announces Launch Information for .РФ
The Russian Federation has announced the launch details regarding the introduction of .РФ (.RF), the first Cyrillic script ccTLD. The Russian Federation has more than 38 million Internet users, most of whom communicate exclusively in the Russian language using Cyrillic script. The Russian Federation does not currently support a Dispute Resolution Policy (DRP) for trademark holders. Thus, CSC has categorized both the opportunity and risk in РФ as "very high".

Launch Schedule:
  • November 25, 2009 - March 25, 2010 - Sunrise registration phase in .РФ for government agencies and trademark holders

  • April 20 - June 15, 2010 - auction phase

  • Effective July 2010 - Landrush registration phase
